I had to debate a bit more about this anime’s inclusion on my list because this anime has a powerful strength, but a critical weakness. This basically means that even if an episode is focused entirely on Atsuko, the main character’s mundane school activities, it will still be a very pretty episode. But what this also means is that all around, Little Witch Academia’s animation is lively and fluid, with stellar works of visual effects and depiction of motion. They get into some weird stuff, and their signature style does eventually appear in Little Witch Academia as well. Studio Trigger is responsible for the high-octane anime like Kill la Kill, Darling in the Franxx, and Kiznaiver. It’s the rare anime that can blend a Hulk-like bartender who swings road signs, and a motorcycle-riding headless horseman, and it somehow all just clicks. You’ll see characters with superhuman strength, intelligence, or biological makeup. Durarara is all about giving you as many interesting characters as possible. While the story is rooted in a real life city, there are realized myths that walk the streets alongside everyone else. It’s a delicious blend of character interplay and modern fantasy. It’s like a totem pole repeatedly rearranging itself as the most forbidding characters change places.

Sometimes it is very obvious why a character has so much influence, and other times, you spend a whole season thinking a character is pitiful or a victim to society, only to find out they are actually making moves over the heads of the ones you thought were at the top. The story is split into what seems like a dozen pieces that each follow a character that will have significant effects on the city. So without churning out too many words about the anime not on this list, let’s get right to what did make it through… I just watch A LOT of anime, to the point where sometimes many of my yearly favorites simply just don’t make the cut anymore. But I say all this mainly to stress that if an anime isn’t on here, that doesn’t automatically mean I am not a fan. Should that gap become significant enough then you may see me eventually craft a top 100, but we’re not very close to that point yet so 50 is the best number to round off to. It’s gotten to the point where there are anime I truly, and wholeheartedly love, but still can’t include. With every year that passes, I stumble upon more anime that feel worthy of this list. Otherwise, all anime listed represent the entire series.

If I only like a particular season of an anime, I will specify so and explain why. There are anime on here that I would rarely recommend to the average fan, and there are some absent from this list that many consider classics. To help you understand exactly how this list is quantified, I need to stress that this list represents my taste, and my personal reaction only. While I can’t predict your taste, I can do my best to describe mine and offer a detailed list of what constitutes the 50 anime I personally love the most. As such, many people are flocking to their buried and forgotten means of killing time, and many of you undoubtedly decided to watch some anime.
